Join us for a singing workshop with radio and TV personality Ken Burton. All abilities welcome. You don’t need to be able to read music for this event.
Ken Burton is a performer, composer, recording artist and conductor as well as judge and adjudicator for BBC Television series The Choir and Musical Director for BBC’s Songs of Praise. Ken Burtons TV performances include The X Factor, Songs of Praise, BBC Proms and many more!
We advise booking early to avoid disappointment. It is not necessary to bring any sheet music. There will be tea and cake and you can bring a packed lunch or visit one of the cafes on the University Campus.
The workshop aims to excite people about choral singing and help participants find their voice. Different types of choral singing will be explored, discovering the common threads running through choral singing, regardless of genre.

Warm-Ups/Vocal Exercises
Quick songs: – songs drawn from a variety of traditions, including songs from the Cameroon Baka tribe tradition, to get people singing, and relaxed
Vivaldi ” Gloria”: – it’s not just in contemporary non-Classical genres that choirs can let go and enjoy infectious rhythms; this movement from the Gloria is bursting with energy.
Bach “Chorale – O Haupt Voll Blut Und Wunden” from ‘St Matthew’s Passion’ – to explore a range of techniques related to the genre of Classical. In addition to learning the pieces, we will explore ways to get to the heart of the music, and its meaning, and the beauty of choral harmony.
“Rivers Of Babylon”: – continuing on the theme of choral harmony a close harmony arrangement, exploring the genre and techniques of close-harmony/Jazz singing, and how they compare with other genres.
Spirituals & Gospel: a selection of Spirituals and gospel, exploring the techniques and joy of the gospel genre; among them Burton’s own “Come And Go With Me” and Salisbury’s up tempo “I Feel Better Now”.
“The Same Song”: – written originally for a multi-schools event, this song gives an opportunity for singers to be creative, in small ensembles, exploring the pop/rock/Soul/music theatre choral genres.
