The University of Essex Choir Award Scheme
We have an established and very successful Award Scheme, designed to encourage young singers to join our choir. There are a limited number of places for all voice parts: soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Our aim is to give young people the experience of singing within a large, auditioned choir under a professional conductor in exciting venues. The successful students also benefit from a university setting and the wealth of musical experience within the choir. Musical scores are provided and fees are met for students who fulfil the commitment of attendance at rehearsals and concerts. Current holder of the award is Anna Hyman.
We are keen to hear from any student between the ages of 14 to 23. You would need to demonstrate developing musical ability, have a good singing voice and commit to regular rehearsals and concerts. Auditions take place annually in October.
You can apply online or if you prefer you can download the form and return a completed copy by post to the Choir Chairman:
Jan Cullum Nasta
Oxford House, Oxford Road
Mistley, Manningtree CO11 2AA
If you would like any further information please phone Jan on 01206 393293 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Next auditions will be held in October 2017
For your audition you will need to bring a prepared song or aria. You may bring your own accompanist, otherwise we will supply one. You will be given sight-reading and aural tests, and asked to sing some scales. If successful, you would receive the Award at the end of the 12-month period which it covered (normally up to June) having satisfied the Chair of the choir that you had fulfilled the Terms and Conditions required. This mainly means complying with the choir’s rules on attendance at rehearsals and concerts.
Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings on the Colchester campus of the University of Essex in the Lecture Theatre Block (LTB6/7) 7pm – 9.30pm.
